I love the We Choose Virtues products! I frequently wonder if I am raising my children to be well rounded virtuous individuals. Am I doing all that I can to teach them the values they need to be successful in life? And by “successful in life”, I mean in the way that matters the most. Are they honest? Kind? Patient with others?
We Choose Virtues was created by Heather McMillan, who had a similar question about youth, “How could children succeed in life without the skills that come from good character?” With that question in mind she created We Choose Virtues. It is an ongoing teaching tool geared towards ages 3-11. My children are 17 months, 8 and 14 years old and I found I could still use it for my youngest and my oldest. I reviewed the Family Kit – Faith Based.
- The Kids Virtue Poster
- The Three Rules Poster
- 13 Teacher’s Virtue Cards for Families
- 12 Flash Cards
The Kids Virtue Posters are bright and colorful; decorated with the 12 virtues and the happy, fun, adorable Virtue Kids.
We keep our Virtue Poster on the most visited site in the house, the fridge, along with the Three Rules Poster. The first thing I was wondering was how in the world all my rules could possible fit into 3 rules! I laughed thinking there was no way. I was wrong! Heather McMillan explains:
“If you look at all the instructions you might ever give a child, they fall into three main categories. Honoring authority, Respecting other people and acts of service. The Three Rules Poster re-states these important rules for you in kid friendly language.”
So now I just tell my big kids I have 3 rules; if you want to know how to follow the 3 rules then just refer to the Virtue Poster.
Every Monday during family home evening we choose a new virtue to highlight for the week using the Teacher’s Virtue Cards. The Teacher’s Virtue Cards are amazing cards I think Heather had me in mind when she created these because they are fun and playful and are loaded with information! They give so many ideas on how to create learning opportunities for each virtue and most are games.
I am not creative so this is a big thing for me. On the front of my Teacher’s Cards there are scripture quotes, which I love because it fits right into family home evening, but you can get them without the scripture. The kit also includes a set of family flash cards, again, to reinforce what the program teaches. The family flash cards have suggestions on games to play our family’s favorite is “flip.”
This truly is an amazing program. A lot of love went into creating this. I honestly believe it can changes lives, and help families come together. Not right off the bat, but the more you work on it – the more it becomes a part of each individual member. It is helping my children to be more like the strong and respectful young men and women I always dreamed of raising. Not perfect kids! Just honest and kind.
I will be reviewing the Teachers Starter Kit – Faith Based soon, so make sure you follow along by subscribing! All the writers will be introducing their children with pieces of We Choose Virtues throughout our Spring Event!
